Report on 2023 So Cal Senior Showcase

The 13th annual southern California Senior showcase was held Sunday March 19th, 2023 at Santiago Canyon College in Orange, CA. 27 teams participated. Here is a report on the event on the prospects we observed who caught out attention.

Top prospects: (*indicates highest consideration)

6’7 PF Athian Athian of J Serra HS (2023) (Tay K Trinity)

Athian is a fairly athletic four man with a decent skill set. He is somewhat on the raw side but can dribble operate on the block. He can pass the ball and he is capable rebounder.

 

6’2 CG DJ Aubrey of Future College Prep 1

Aubrey is an athletic combo guard that has solid ball handling and passing skills. He’s an effective transition playmaker and he has a nice mid-range pull up in the half court.

 

6’2 PG Isaiah Baptista of Future Prep 1

Baptista is a solid one-man with nice all-around skills. He can handle and pass the ball and he shoots it fairly well with 3-point range. And he is a leader who can run a team.

 

6’6 SF Aeramiah Binford of Ascending Life (2023)

Binford is a real athletic wing who has the ability to go up, over, by defenders on a regular basis. He’s got an impressive first step and is difficult to contain. He’s also a quality rebounder.

 

*6’4 CG EJ Bryson of J Serra HS (2023) (Tay K Trinity)

Bryson was really good at this event and impressed the coaches/scouts in attendance in a big way. He’s a long and athletic combo guard who is a good driver with a nice first step. He has an impressive pull-up game and he can rebound well from the guard position.

 

6’5 SF Dylan Cabbs of Citrus College (2023) (Stars 2023)

Cabbs is an athletic wing who contributes at both ends of the floor. He can handle and pass it, he sees the floor and he makes plays in transition. Cabbs can get to the basket on the drive and he can rebound and block a shot at the defensive end.

 

*6’2 CG Bailey Chambers of Rancho Christian HS (2023) (Independent 4)

Chambers did a nice job proving his value in this event and showed a promising all-around package. He’s a solid ball handler and a good passer who pushes the break and makes things happen. He’s also a capable defender and a nice rebounder from the guard position.

 

6’6 SF Iverson Cheney of PHH Prep (AZ) (2023)

Chaney is a long and athletic three-man who is a little on the thin side. He does a nice job getting to the hoop on the drive and he can rebound the ball.

 

6’2 PG La Qwon Cole of Bishop Montgomery HS (2023) (LA Elite)

Cole is a fairly athletic one man with solid ball handling and passing skills. He sees the floor well and does a nice job making plays in transition and he’s an ok 3-point shooter. Cole is pretty steady and consistent and does not make too many mistakes.

 

5’8 PG Joel Crandall of Foothill HS (UT) (2023)

Crandall is a competitive one-man who has a nice skill set offensively. He’s a confident ball handler who has a very nice pull-up game-both in transition and in the half court. And he is a good shooter with 3-point range.

 

6’9 C Gordon Deng of Cooper International Academy (2023)

Deng has long arms and athleticism and can run the floor. He’s a little thin and could use some bulk/strength. He has a decent drop step and a mini jump hook. Deng comes up with rebounds due to his length/athleticism.

 

*6’4 PF James Freeman of College Prep (2023)

Freeman got the attention of scouts/coaches in attendance at the event with his play. He’s a strong and powerful four man that is an under-sized over-achiever. He has a nice face-up drive from the mid-range. Most significantly he is a real good rebounder.

 

6’1 SG Amari Gray of California HS (2023) (Lakeshow Seniors)

Gray is a long and athletic two guard who is a little on the thin side. He has some skills, most notably his passing, and he can defend on ball.

 

*6’10 PF Joe Grahovac of Future College Prep 1

Grahovac was very impressive at this event. He is a face up four man with very long arms who can run the floor. He can handle it some and get to the basket on the short drive from the high post area. He’s a good passer who sees the floor and he can rebound the ball.

 

6’3 SG Cypress Graham of AOSS Prep (2023)

Graham is athletic shooting guard with some skills. He’s a confident ball handler who has a nice first step on the drive.

 

5’11 PG Nash Hinck of AHA HS (UT) (2023)

Hinck is a pretty solid one-man who is a competitor and a decent athlete. He handles it well and is a real nice passer. He has a mid-range pull up and he is an effective penetrator.

 

6’2 CG Nathan Ibarra of Southeast HS (2023) (LA Mirada ACR)

Ibarra is a competitive combo guard who finds ways to get things done. He can handle it and he can get to the hoop on the drive. He also has a pretty good feel of the game.

 

5’8 PG Maiki Jackson of Fohlich Sports Academy (2023)

Jackson is a strong and athletic one man. He plays with force and can run a team. He takes care of the ball well and has a solid mid-range pull-up.

 

*6’2 SG Dennis Johnson of Cerritos College (2023) (Stars 2023)

Johnson was among the standouts at the event. He’s a very athletic two guard who is a difficult matchup. He handles it, drives it and shoots it well (with 3 range). Johnson is in the “hard to guard” category.

 

5’11 PG Lalou Kalejaiye of Middlebrooks Academy (2023)

Kalejaivo brings a nice all-around offensive game to the table. He handles and passes it well and has a nice pull-up game in the half court. He also shoots it ok with long range.

 

6’1 PG Higgy Katoa of TMG Prep Black (2023)

Katoa is athletic one man who pushes the break on a consistent basis and makes plays. He is able to create opportunities for himself and others on a consistent basis in the half court.

 

5’11 PG Devin Lewis of Inderkum HS (2023) (Lakeshow Seniors)

Lewis caught some attention with his play. He’s an athletic one man who showed some ability to score as well as to distribute.

 

6’1 CG Aaron “Trey” Long of Fairmont Prep (2023) (Independent 2)

Long is an impressive combo guard with skills and athleticism. He has a nice pull up game in transition. He is a solid shooter with long range who puts it up with a lot of confidence.

 

6’0 CG MJ Madore of Orange Glen HS (2023) (Hidden City)

Madore has a nice all-around package of skills and athleticism. He’s a capable ball handler and passer who can shoot it with 3-point range and is effective at catch and shoot.

 

5’10 PG Jordon Malveaux of Adelanto HS (2023) (Team HD)

Malveaux is a fairly athletic point guard. He has a pretty solid skill set. He handles it well, has a nice pull-up game in the half court and he’s good 3-point shooter.

 

6’7 SF Estebann Mann of Washington Prep (2023) (LA Elite)

Mann is a versatile and fairly athletic wing. He has an ok first step and can get to the hoop and finish. He also can pull up in the mid-range. Mann is also a capable rebounder. He’s a little on the thin side and could use some bulk/strength.

 

5’11 PG Isaac Martinez of Clovis West HS (2023) (Lakeshow Seniors)

Martinez is a tough-minded one man who maximizes what he has. He plays with confidence, and he has a good feel and some skills.

 

5’10 PG Jackson Mosley of St. Francis HS (2023) (Independent 3)

Mosley is a floor general who can run a team. He’s a smooth ball handler who makes plays on the break and in the half court consistently. He sees the floor well and has a solid pull-up game in the half court.

 

6’3 SG Mykale Mundy of Future College Prep 1

Mundy has nice athleticism and can really run. He’s a solid ball handler with a good first step on the drive. He’s a capable defender who can guard on ball.

 

6’6 PF Meke Okereke of Menlo-Atherton HS (2023) (Lakeshow Seniors)

Okereke is an athletic four man with long arms, He can dribble operate on the block and has a jump hook. He’s also has a decent face-up drive from the high post areas and he can rebound the ball well.

 

*6’3 SG Daniel Okonah of Orem HS (UT) (2023)

Okonah is a fairly athletic two guard with skills who can run the floor. He can handle the ball, has a pull up game in the half court and is a good 3-point shooter. He also finds a way to come up with rebounds from the guard position.

 

6’9 C Boston Painter of Layton HS (UT) (2023)

Painter is a strong and long five man who is pretty active. He can dribble operate on the block and finds ways to score. He is also a solid rebounder.

 

5’9 PG Jermaine Patton of Ygnacio Valley (2023) (Independent 1)

Patton is an athletic one man that had a solid performance at this event. He handles it well and is effective penetrating into the lane. He pulls up well in the mid-range and he’s a good shooter with long range.

 

6’0 CG Brandon Releford of Frohlich Sports Academy (2023)

Releford is an athletic combo guard that gets a lot accomplished at both ends. He makes plays in transition and in the half court, both for himself and his teammates. He does a nice job consistently beating defenders on the drive.

 

5’10 PG AJ Robinson of Crenshaw HS (2023) (Independent 4)

Robinson came up with a solid all-around performance at the event. He’s a good ball handler who sees the floor well and can find the open man. Significantly, he is a hard-working and solid on-ball defender.

 

6’3 CG Malachai Samuels of TMG Prep Orange (2023)

Samuels is a combo guard who brings a lot to the table. He’s athletic, he can handle it, has a mid-range pull-up, shoots it ok (3 range) and gets to the basket on the drive.

 

6’5 W Connor Scales of Culver City HS (2023) (LA Elite)

Scales had a lot of coaches talking about him after watching him play. He’s fairly athletic with long arms and he can elevate and finish at the rim. He’s also a capable one on one defender.

 

5’10 G Nathan Serrano of Cooper International Academy (2023)

Serrano shows a lot of confidence in his play. He’s a solid handler and a real nice passer. He has an ok floater and he shoots it ok from the perimeter.

 

5’11 PG Kellen Torrey of California HS (2023) (Lakeshow Seniors)

Torrey brings a lot to the table, and he can contribute at both ends of the floor. He handles it well, is capable making plays in transition and can pull up in the mid-range. He’s an ok 3-point shooter and a good defender.

 

*6’0 PG Raydon Thorson of PHH Prep (AZ) (2023)

Thorson “showed out” and was most impressive. He’s an athletic and active one man with an impressive all-around game. He can score and he can distribute. Thorson makes plays in transition and in the half court for himself and his teammates consistently.

 

6’0 PG Kai Usher of Serra HS (2023) (LA Elite)

Usher is an athletic one man with some skills. He’s a good ball handler and passer who sees the floor. In the half court he shoots it ok (3 range), penetrates effectively and has a nice hesitation move.

 

6’9 PF Ryan Weber of Future Prep 1

Weber was an intriguing prospect who showed nice all-around skills at this event. He is a confident shooter with 3-point range, and he has a decent post-up game with a clever jump hook. He is also a good passer.

 

*6’1 CG Makaih Williams of Future College Prep 1

Williams was arguably the best player at the event. He’s a real athletic and skilled combo guard who gets a lot done. He sees the floor very well in transition and has a knack for making the right pass at the right time. In the half court he can shoot it with 3 range, he can drive it and has a nice floater. Williams recently de-committed from Wyoming.

 

6’3 SG Delyle Williams of St. John Bosco HS (2023) (Tay K Trinity)

Williams is an athletic two guard who impacts the games at both ends. He can handle it, pull up in the mid-range, drive it and shoot it ok (with 3 range). He also shows some ability to defend on ball.

 

6’0 CG Mozell Wilson of Ygnacio Valley (2023) (Independent 1)

Wilson is an athletic combo guard with a solid all-around offensive game. He’s a good ball handler who is effective on the drive. And he shoots the ball fairly well with long range.

 

*6’2 Maurice Wright of St. Paul HS (2023) (Independent 2)

Wright was clearly one of the standout performers at the event. He is an athletic combo guard with an impressive skill set. He showed just about everything offensively except for posting up. He has the ability to create for himself and others consistently.

5’7 PG O’Mare Edwards of College Prep (2023) – handles it, real nice passer, can penetrate

6’9 PF/C David Filipovas of Dublin HS (Lakeshow Seniors) (2023) – decent post up, can rebound
