Report on 2022 So Cal Senior Showcase

The twelfth annual Southern California Senior Showcase was held Sunday, March 20 at Santiago Canyon College in Orange, CA. 33 teams and 300 players participated in largest senior event in the western United States. Approximately 50 college coaches attended. Here is a look at some top prospects who caught our attention.

Top Prospects: (*indicates highest consideration)

6’5 G/W Dillan Baker of Salpointe Catholic HS (AZ) 2022 (Apex Athletix)

Baker is a competitive guard/wing who is deceptively athletic and can run and jump well. He does a real nice job finishing in transition and can shoot it well from 3-point range. He has a good feel and plays with a lot of confidence.

6’3 SG Blake Ballard of LA Premier Prep (CA) 2022 (LA Premier White)

Ballard does a nice job finishing on the fast break but he is also productive in the half court. He shoots the ball well with long range and he gets to the basket on the drive. He is a pretty consistent scorer- just needs to prove himself at the defensive end.

6’4 SF Carlos Bedolla of Bell Gardens HS (CA) 2022 (La Mirada ACR Ballerz)

Bedolla is a versatile wing with a nice skill set. His best asset is his ability to finish at the rim, both in transition and in the half court. He has a clever floater and an ok first step. He can be a problem matchup.

6’3 PG Zach Broadus of LA Premier Prep (CA) 2022 (LA Premier White)

Broadus has solid ball-handling and passing skills and he has the ability to create for himself and others. He’s a solid play-maker in transition and he has an effective pull-up game in the mid-range. And uniquely, he can rebound the ball from the guard position.

6’6 SF Ryan Capron of Georges Brassens HS (France) 2021 (Xima Providence Prep)

Capron is a wing with a nice blend of athleticism and skill level. He is a team guy who is willing and able to make the pass to the open man. He is effective finishing in transition on a regular basis.

6’4 SG/SF Evan Clayton of Arcadia HS (AZ) 2022 (AZ Select Unsigned)

Clayton is a guard/wing who showed some nice skills and aggressiveness. He is very effective at finishing, both in transition and in the half court. He ahs a deceptive first step and gets by defenders consistently. He’s a real nice passer who finds the open man very well.

6’5 G/W Jeremiah Dargan of Clayton Valley Charter (CA) 2022 (Lakeshow Seniors)

Dargan is labeled a mystery man because it is a mystery why he is still out there. Funny how things work sometimes in the world of recruiting… Dargan is a proven scorer from all three levels and has length and athleticism. He does need to show more at the defensive end but the guy is a Division I player who has slipped through the cracks.

7’2 C Sidy Diallo of St. Paul HS (CA) 2022 (Swordsmen)

Diallo is a fairly athletic true five-man with long arms who can run. He is an effective shot blocker/changer who can be a nightmare for opponents. He can rebound and outlet the ball efficiently. Offensively, he is a very clever passer around the basket. He is still a bit raw but his upside is off the charts. Surefire D-1 guy who could be a monster before it is all said and done.

6’3 CG Malachi Douyon of Pacific Collegiate School (CA) 2022 (Arsenal Orange)

Douyon turned in a splendid performance and caught the attention of numerous scouts/coaches. He has solid ball-handling skills and makes pretty good decisions with the ball in his hands. He sees the floor well in transition and does a nice job making plays, showing a consistently effective pull up game.  He has a nice hesitation drive and he shows some ability to rebound from the guard position.

6’4 G/W Rui Han of Crean Lutheran HS (CA) 2022 (Elev8 Elite Seniors)

Han is a highly competitive guard/wing with a motor that is always running.  He is a versatile scorer plays in attack mode. He has a solid pull up game and is an impressive driver. He probably does need to prove himself as a perimeter shooter, but he is a good one to have on your side.

6’2 PG CJ Hardy of LA Premier Prep (CA) 2022 (LA Premier Black)

Hardy is an athletic and skilled one man who really turn on the jets in transition. He has real nice first step on the drive and he can break down defenders consistently. And he does attack consistently and aggressively. Nice-looking prospect who merits Division I consideration.

6’7 SF Emanwel Henry of San Diego Mesa College 2022-Juco (Kingdom Academy)

Henry is a real athletic wing with long arms who can get to the rack and finish. He has a good first step and is able to break down defenders consistently. He is also a clever passer and a capable rebounder. He does need to prove that he can shoot it from the perimeter.

6’0 PG Christian “Bam” Johnson of TMG Prep (CA) 2022 (Cali Rebels)

Johnson showed out at this event and proved that he belongs on the radar. He’s an athletic one man with nice burst who can impact the game at both ends. He sees the floor well and has a clever floater at the end of the break. He goes to the rack real hard and can finish. He gets after it and is not fun to play against. He is a Division I prospect.

6’2 CG Prophet Johnson of Golden State Prep (CA) 2022 (Golden State Prep)

You know there is something to a kid when numerous college coaches ask you about him. Such was the case with Prophet Johnson after this event. It’s mystery why he is still on the board. He shows the athleticism and skills to be a Division I player. He gets a lot done and should have many coaches knocking on his door.

6’1 PG Carter Killian of Grantsville HS (UT) 2022 (Salt Lake Rebels Red)

Killian is an energetic point guard who is always in “go mode.” He pushes the break consistently and gets things done. He is a very effective penetrator in the half court, he is a capable and willing passer and he can shoot it with 3-point range.

6’2 CG Miles Klapper of Serra HS (CA) 2022 (Lakeshow Seniors)

Klapper has a very solid performance at this event. He’s a competitor with some skills who gets things done through consistent effort. He sees the court and makes good decisions in transition for himself and others. He has a pretty good feel and plays with a lot of confidence.

5’11 PG Kylle Magdangal of Marina HS (CA) 2022 (Los Al/Marina)

Magdangal is a highly competitive point guard who is very aggressively and not fun to play against. He’s a very confident ball handler who sees the floor well on the break. He is a consistent penetrator in the half court setting teammates up to score. He is a good shooter with 3 range which forces opponents to step up on him and giving more opportunities to penetrate.

6’1 SG Trevor Meikle of Thousand Oaks HS (CA) 2022 (BTI)

Meikle falls in the rare category nowadays of being a sleeper. He showed he belongs on the radar at this event. He’s a bona-fide competitor who can score from all three levels. Best of all, he is an intense competitor.

6’1 CG Daniel Mellgoza of Los Alamitos HS (CA) 2022 (Los Al/Marina)

Mellgoza is a combo guard who can run the floor and never stops running. He’s a solid scorer who is a nice-looking (set) shooter with long range and he has a nice hesitation drive. He most certainly gets the most out of what he has.

6’4 CG Michael Miller of Oak Hills HS (CA) 2022 (Oaks Hills)

Miller is a definite member of the mystery team. His school being in a more remote location is probably why he is still out there. He does a lot of things to impact the game at both ends on a consistent basis. He’s an athletic combo guard who can score, defend and rebound. He’s a solid Division I prospect.

6’4 G/W Mikey Pierce of American Canyon HS (CA) 2022 (Be Skilled Prep)

Pierce is a fairly athletic guard/wing who is a versatile all-around scorer. He can score from all three areas (perimeter, mid-range, at the rim) and plays with confidence. His issue is lack of physical strength is the issue. If that comes then the sky is the limit for him.

6’8 C Damarion Pouncil of Cathedral HS (CA) 2022 (Middlebrooks Academy)

Pouncil probably could be on the all-mystery team with it being somewhat of a mystery why he is still out there. He’s athletic with real long arms and has the ability to impact the game without scoring a point. He can block a shot and create havoc for opponents, and he can rebound at both ends. He is a little thin and needs to develop some bulk/strength but he does have a promising upside.

6’1 CG Brandon Releford of Compton HS (CA) 2022 (Independent #2)

Releford is the type of player who you watch and say “I want him on my team.” He’s a guy who impacts the game at both ends and is pretty consistent. He can score and he can defend and he plays with confidence. Great one to have on your side!

6’8 C Daniel Rouzan of AOSS Prep (CA) 2022 (AOSS Prep Seniors)

Rouzan is a strong, big-bodied post-man with long arms who is a presence inside. He can be hard to guard and has a nice mini-jump hook. He is a solid rebounder in his area and shows some and some ability to defend in the post. He is a Division I guy.

6’6 PF/C Mardoche Sambou of TMG Prep (CA) 2022 (TMG Prep 1)

Sambou is a big-body postman with fairly long arms and some surprising lift. He can be “hard to guard” on the block. He has a solid drop step move and can finish in traffic. Impressively, he can step outside and hit the 3-point shot. He can also rebound in his area.

6’4 CG Melo Sanchez of Veritas Prep (CA) 2022 (Veritas Prep)

Sanchez is a player who continues to prove himself with consistent performances and this event was another example of that. He brings a lot to the table in terms of energy and skills. He does a very good job of creating opportunities for himself and others. He is effective on and off the ball. He’s a good one to have on your side.

6’4 CG Cord Stansberry of Shadow Hills HS (CA) 2022 (Los Angeles Elite)

Stansberry is combo guard with nice all-around skills and a good feel for the game. He can score and he can distribute. He’s comfortable on or off the ball and he makes good decisions. He is a guy any coach can be confident in. He is a Division I prospect.

6’7 PF Brendan Terry of LA Premier Prep (CA) 2022 (LA Premier Black)

Terry is a strong and athletic four-man who is real active. He’s a capable ball handler and passer who can get to the hoop on the face-up drive. He shows some post-up skills and he is a quality rebounder who get to the ball outside his area. He merits looks at the Division I level.

6’4 CG Jackson Tucker of Bakersfield Christian HS (CA) 2022 (Independent #1)

Tucker was another one who received a lot of attention after this performance at this event. He has just about all you need at the guard position: size, skill, athleticism, feel. And he is a very active rebounder from the guard spot. He’s a legit prospect who “gets it.”

6’6 SF Sage Wayans of South Pasadena HS (CA) 2022 (Tiger Nation)

Wayans is an accomplished all-around wing scorer. He’s not spectacular at anything but just solid and consistent. He plays with confidence and has a pretty good feel. He just needs to increase his athleticism some.

6’1 CG Spivey Word of Damien HS (CA) 2022 (Elev8 Elite National)

Word was one of the standouts at this event. He’s an athletic combo guard with a nice skill set who is a tough matchup. A three-level scorer who is effective on the break and in the half court. He has a pretty good feel and he does compete consistently. He has what it takes to win!

6’5 PF/SF Jamaal Wright of San Diego Mesa College 2022-Juco (Kingdom Academy)

Wright is a solid combo forward who is a steady performer. He’s a decent ball handler who shows some ability to face-up drive from the mid-range. He is a capable post-up player with a solid drop step move on the block. And he can rebound the ball in his area. He just needs to develop more conditioning.

6’0 PG Evan Young of American Fork HS (UT) 2022

If you look up competitor in the dictionary you will see a picture of Evan Young. He is a Warrior personified. And as the saying goes: “he got skills.” He attacks consistently and he is very good making plays- both in transition and in the half court. A real nice passer who can ignite a team. Simply, he is a model example of how to play the game.
