Report on Arizona Memorial Day Classic
The Arizona Memorial Day Classic was held Saturday and Sunday May 29th – 30th at the Arizona Grand Resort Hotel. Here is a report on the event on the prospects who caught our attention.
Top Prospects (*indicates highest consideration)
6’0 PG Tre Bell of Heritage Academy (AZ) 2021 (PAL Elite 2021)
Bell is an athletic one–man who pushes the envelope on the fast break pretty consistently. He’s a confident ball handler who gets things done on the break and can finish it with a nice floater. He shoots it ok with 3-point range and can get to the basket on the drive.
*6’10 PF Blake Buchanan of Lake City HS (ID) 2023 (Idaho Premier 2021)
Buchanan was a big-time discovery at this event. He has an impressive all-around game offensively with the ability to score inside and outside. He’s also a solid rebounder with the length to get to the ball. Knows how to play. Mid major prospect who already has D1 offers.
6’4 W Dylan Cox of Paraclete HS (CA) 2022 (Loopers Hoopers Elite)
Cox showed a nice combination of skills and effort. He can handle and pass it and is a solid playmaker in transition who can finish for himself. He has a solid pull up game, both on the break and in the half court. He shoots it fairly wall with long range and he has a solid floater. Most importantly, he is a hard-working competitor.
6’10 C Mike Day of Middleton HS (ID) 2023 (Idaho Premier 16U)
Day is another big man who attracted attention and put himself on the radar in his class. He has long arms, pretty good hands and a little bit of lift. He does need to show more offensively, but he does slow a drop step on the block and an adequate 3-point shot. He is active on the glass pretty consistently.
6’1 SG Mahki Golston of North Canyon HS (AZ) 2024 (PAL Elite 2024)
Golston is a versatile two guard who makes contributions in different ways. He can handle it, has a nice half court pull-up game and a clever floater. He shoots it ok with long range but his shot selection is a little shaky. He is also a capable rebounder from the guard position.
6’6 PF Sawyr Hansen of Middleton HS (ID) 2023 (Idaho Premier 16U)
Hansen is a competitive four man who can play inside and outside. He can beat the defender on the face-up drive and he can dribble operate on the block. And he is a pretty consistent rebounder. He maxes out what he has.
*611 C Bradey Henige of Cactus HS (AZ) 2024 (D1 Nation Arizona)
Henige continues to put himself high on the 2024 radar with his play. He’s a solid postup player with a nice drop step and a turnaround shot who can score in traffic. He’s a very consistent rebounder in his area who pursues the ball. His just needs to remember to outlet to the guard and not try to dribble up the court himself. He will play Division I basketball – it’s just a question of what level he ends up at, but the future is very bright for him.
*6’1 PG Justus Jackson of Eduprize Prep (AZ) 2021 (AZ Select 17 Contreras)
Jackson is an athletic and skilled one-man who excels in the transition game and can score at all three levels in the half court. He needs to play with more of a killer instinct but it is a definite Division I player.
6’0 PG Deven Johnson of AZ Compass Prep (AZ) 2023 (PAL Elite 2023)
Johnson is an impressive one man who brings a lot to the table. He’s long and athletic with nice burst. He pushes the break consistently and makes things happen. In the half court he is a solid driver and an ok 3-point shooter and he has a nice floater as well.
*6’8 PF Chris Long of Vista Grande HS (AZ) 2032 (PAL Elite 2022)
Long was a revelation in this event and showed that he merits D1 consideration. He can really fill it up as a long-range shooter and he takes good shots. He’s a good passer and he has a decent post-up game. He’s also a capable rebounder in his area. D1 coaches need to check him out.
6’4 G/W Chase Mayo of Glenview Prep (AZ) 2022 (PAL Elite 2022)
Mayo is a skilled guard/wing who runs the floor well. He is a real nice presser and a good 3-point shooter. He also has a nice hesitation drive. He shows that he can be a difficult matchup for the opponent. Nice-looking prospect.
6’0 SG Jayce Mc Guirk of Desert Ridge HS (AZ) 2024 (AZ Select 15U Aby)
Mc Guirk is a talented young two guard who has an impressive all-around game for such a youngster. He’s effective making plays for himself and others in transition. He can score from all three levels in the half court (perimeter, mid-range, at the rim). This kid is a legit 2024 prospect and has a bright future.
6’3 SG Andre Norris of Verrado HS (AZ) 2022 (PAL Elite 2022)
Norris is a two guard with some strength and athleticism who can hurt you in a lot of ways. He’s really solid making plays in transition and he pulls up very nicely in the half court. He can shoot it fairly well with range and he is a money passer who sees the floor well. He’s a good one to have on your side.
6’5 W Jake Ten Berge of PHH Prep (AZ) 2021 (AZ Select 17 U Paynes)
Ten Berge is a competitive wing who is a solid all-around scorer. He is a very strong driver who goes to the hoop very aggressively. He can handle and pass it and he is a confident 3-point shooter. He also has a nice turnaround shot on the block. And he can rebound and pass it. He probably should not still be available but Covid has its complications…
6’5 W Jaylen Wesley of Mc Clintock HS (AZ) 2022 (AZ Select 13 Contreras)
Wesley is a strong and competitive wing who gets a lot done. He can handle and pass, does a nice job moving without the ball, shoots it ok with 3 range (but has a slow release) and is a competent rebounder. He is productive and that is attractive to college coaches.
