Report on 2018 Nor Cal Spring Showcase

 

The seventh annual Nor Cal Spring Showcase was held Friday-Sunday April 27-29 at Jamtown in Oakland and various sites in Livermore. 156 teams participated. Here is a report on the event. (We reported only on the teams we observed and evaluated.)

6’9 C Emmanuel Adeoye of Salesian College Prep 2019 (NBBA HGSL)

Very athletic rim runner. Shot blocking force and rebounder. Offense is somewhat raw. Has a nice upside.

 

6’5 SF Emmanuel Agubata of Rancho Verde HS 2019 (WCE 17U Silver)

Athletic wing. Versatile scorer who can get to the basket on the drive and can post up. Rebounds it fairly well.

 

*6’8 PF/C Abdul Ahmad of Torrance HS 2019 (WCE 17 High Academic)

Long and athletic combo post with big feet. Passes it fairly well, can shoot it with 3 range. Solid rebounder who outlets it very well. VERY intriguing (D-1) prospect who was the sleeper of the event!

 

6’2 G Jaden Alexander of Vanden HS 2021 (Lakeshow 15 Black)

Strong athlete who is a good finisher. Runs the floor well. Ok hands to catch and finish.

 

6’5 SF Jalen Allen of Deer Valley HS (AZ) 2019 (Powerhouse Hoops 17 King)

Athletic wing with long arms. Runs the floor well, finishes in transition effectively. Decent rebounder.

 

5’11 PG Laird Anderson Jr. of Mark Keppel HS 2020 (WCE 16 Silver)

Solid one man who has the ability to attack the gaps off the bounce to score and/or set up teammates. Offensively looks to aggressively attack the rim using physical strength while finishing with contact.

 

6’7 F Jack Andre of Granite Bay HS 2020 (YBA 16u Elite Collins)

Big post man. Runs the floor and has ok hands. Good defender. Will alter a lot of shots.

 

6’3 SF Connor Andrews of Fusion Academy 2020 (NBBA 16u Showcase)

Great communicator on both ends of the floor and strong leadership skills. Shooter who gives maximum effort.

 

*6’3 SG Benjamin Barrett of Piedmont HS 2018 (Lakeshow Seniors)

Physical player who likes to bully smaller guards. Slashing ability, strong handle. Skilled in pick and roll settings. Sees passing lanes well and competes on both ends.

 

5’10 G Paolo Belfiore of Santa Margarita HS 2022 (WCE UA 15 Gold)

Crafty guard that can shoot from the mid-range and three. Defends hard and hustles for extra possessions.

 

6’7 PF Matthew Bender of Francis Parker HS 2019 (WCE 17U Silver)

Strong and hard-working four man. Moves without the ball, can score on the block. Shoots it ok with 3 range.

 

5’9 PG Silas Bennion of Churchill HS (OR) 2020 (Team Fly Largent 16u)

Point guard and a good facilitator. Good eye seeing the court and a good passer.  Okay catch and shoot.

 

*6’8 PF Ethan Berks of Santa Monica HS 2020 (Cali Stars 16U Elite)

Runs the floor well. Finishes around the basket. Can knock down the 3. Has a good enough handle to get by a defender off the dribble. Low-mid major D1 talent.

 

6’7 PF Arrish Bhandal of Archbishop Mitty HS 2021 (WCE Nor Cal 15u UAA)

Long and active post. Shot blocker. Run the floor well and posts hard. Good finisher through contact.

 

6’2 SG Trent Blackshire of Piedmont HS 2018 (Uptempo 17U)

Runs the floor very well, finishes in the paint, decent shooter. Sets really good screens for a guard.

 

6’0 G Justin Bolding of Woods Cross HS (UT) 2020 (Utah Premier 16 National)

Solid all-around player with a High IQ. Plays with good pace and patience.  Glue guy that can shoot the ball well. Gets to the basket and has the ability to finish strong through contact. Can play multiple positions.  Hybrid player.

 

*6’1 PG Za-Ontay Boothman of Buckeye Union HS (AZ) 2020 Powerhouse Hoops 16 Ortega

Floor general with a very high I.Q. Uses great change of pace. Three level scorer with great vision. Competes on both ends.

 

6’4 SF Brock Bowers of Napa HS 2021 (NBBA 15U Prescott)

High energy player that is extremely active on both ends of the floor making an impact on every possession. Uses nice crafty finishes in the open court to get around defenders for layups.

Strong physical specimen that plays with an edge.

 

*6’4 SG Chris Bradford of Dorsey HS 2019 (A Team 16 Elite)

Athletic guard that can get to the basket with quickness and agility.  Offensively scores well off the cut as well as off the bounce.  Good handler that can handle ball pressure.  Good shooter that can hit the three as well as the mid-range.  Competes on both ends with high energy. 

 

6’5 F Carlton Brown III 2021 Mission College Prep (Sacramento Soldiers 15u)

Strong forward that runs the floor well. Good rebounder. Good hands to finish lay ups.

 

5’11 PG Jared Brown of Cypress HS 2019 (La Elite 17u Premier)

Southpaw floor general who is very poised under pressure. Competes aggressively on both ends. Very good shooter, has great court vision, penetrates effectively.

 

6’5 SF Kyle Brown of Dublin HS 2018 (Lakeshow Seniors)

Long athlete who can play above the rim. Slashes to the basket constantly. Plays with energy on both ends of the floor.

 

6’6 PF Wynton Brown of St. John Bosco HS 2020 (LA Elite 16u Premier)

Athletic forward who can block shots. Has a good handle and is a good rebounder. Good hands.

 

6’5 C Jaden Brownell of Alta HS (UT) 2021 (Utah Premier 15U National)

Long fundamental player who has a nice touch around the rim and an array of moves on the block. Contests shots well with his length, runs the floor extremely well for easy baskets.

 

6’2 G/W Jamal Briscoe of Serra HS 2019 (LA Elite 17u Premier)

Capable ball handler, ok driver. Is a decent set shooter with 3 range (has a slow release).

 

6’4 SG Christopher Bunch of SRVCA 2022 (WCE Nor Cal 15 Black)

Long guard that can create his own shot in any situation with an array of moves. Huge upside with size and athleticism, has the ability to guard 1-4.

 

6’5 C Nathan Burns of Santa Clara HS 2020 (Top Flight 16U Red)

High energy player that plays both ends of the court.  Good rebounder that competes for extra possessions. Runs the floor hard in both offensive and defensive transition.  Solid post game with ability to finish with a jump hook or at the rim.

 

6’5 SG Nigel Burris 2021 of Stuart Hall HS (WCE 15u Nor Cal UAA)

Athletic guard that finishes strong in transition. Long and versatile defender that covers ground quickly.

 

6’8 Jacob Butler of Roseville HS 2021 (WCE 15u Silver Nor Cal)

Big post and a good finisher. Runs the floor well, has soft hands. Good rebounder.

 

*6’6 PG Dylan Cabs of Mayfair HS 2020 (California Stars 16 Elite)

Lefty with a very strong handle and great first step. EXCELLENT passer capable of finding anyone at anytime. Uses athletic gifts to play above the rim, rebound, and be disruptive on defense.

 

6’3 SG Emmanuel Callas of Campolindo HS 2021 (WCE Nor Cal 15UAA)

Solid glue guy with a high motor that plays hard on both ends of the floor. Good defender that gets into passing lanes. Finishes strong in transition, nice spot up shooter. Willing to crash the class on offense.

 

5’7 PG Jason Carpenter of Novato HS 2020 (NBBA 16u Showcase)

High I.Q. Solid shooter with good touch on floaters inside.

 

6’3 SG Grayson Carper of Clovis HS 2019 (California United 559 17u)

Nice all-around scorer from all three areas. Runs the floor well. Makes things happen.

 

6’6 C Kaleb Carter of Stagg HS 2018 (1 Team 1 Dream 17u)

Athletic shot blocker with massive wing span who alters a lot of shots at the rim.

Shows the ability to guard multiple positions on the perimeter. Can handle in the open floor.

 

6’3 G Derrien Carter-Hollinger of Foothills Christian HS 2021 (Oakland Soldiers 15u Green)

Long athletic guard. Lefty who can play multiple positions. Good driver and rebounder. Plays hard.

 

*6’4 G/W Miles Ceballos of Crossroads HS 2020 (LA Elite 16u Premier)

Long and athletic. Smooth handler, excellent passer with a knack for finding the open man.

 

6’4 SG Samuel Certo of Notre Dame Prep 2019 (Powerhouse Hoops 17 Schumaker)

Runs the floor well. Really good shooter with 3 range. Solid rebounder from the guard position.

 

*6’2 W Gavin Chowen of Viewmont High (UT) 2020 (Utah Premier 16 Nat)

Athletic wing with a high motor.  Offensively has the ability to create shot opportunities off the bounce and aggressively get into the lanes.  Good shooter who can hit the three. Runs hard in transition both offensively and defensively. Active body defensively with ability to guard a big or the perimeter.  Good rebounder that competes consistently on the glass.

 

6’8 C Trey Chapman of Healdsburg HS 2019 (NBBA 17u Gray)

Post with very solid footwork and instincts as a cutter. Wing span allows him to alter shots defensively.

 

5’10 G Devan Chung of Viewpoint HS 2021 (WCE 15u UAA)

Quick and crafty guard. Good facilitator and passer. Has a great feel. Needs to work on his shooting

skills.

 

6’4 G/W Brandon Congdon of Spanish Fork HS (UT) 2019 (Salt Lake Metro 17 Black)

Real nice ball handler and passer, makes things happen in transition. Can rebound.

 

6’1 CG Dylon Cook of Independence HS 2020 (Road Runners 17/16)

Combo guard with the ability to score or be a distributor. Confident handler, has a middle game half court, nice shooter with real deep range.

 

*6’2 SG Oreon Courtney of West Albany HS (OR) 2019 (Active PCH Leaders 17u)

Long and athletic slasher who is very aggressive in transition. Deceptively explosive and able to play above the rim. Capable scorer at all three levels and shows a nice touch on floaters. Solid rebounder who pursues the ball.

 

6’3 PG Erich Cumby of Freedom HS 2018 (Shawn Smith Basketball 17)

Real complete offensive scorer. Shoots and drives it well, pulls up well in the half court. Can pull up and can finish in transition.

 

6’3 SG Julian Dallas of Bellarmine College Prep 2021 (Team Supernova 15u)

Strong driver with a really good motor. Ok catch and shoot. Plays hard and with energy.

 

6’7 P Nicholas Davidson of Santa Margarita HS 2021 (WCE 15u UAA)

Long and athletic post. Runs the floor well and is a good shot blocker. Good post moves down low.

 

6’2 G Jarutune Davis of Miramonte HS 2021 (WCE 15u Silver Nor Cal)

Strong guard. Plays the point. Good shooter and facilitator for his team.

 

*5’11 PG Aidan Demian of Branson HS 2019 (NBBA 17u Gray)

Impressive IQ/feel for the game. A skilled shooter who can string threes together in bunches.

 

6’7 C George Dettlinger of San Ramon Valley HS 2020 (Lakeshow16 White)

Traditional big man with good fundamentals and footwork.  Moves to the right spots offensively and uses post angles to effectively score off the block. Good screener who knows how to roll to the basket and seal.  Keeps the ball high when finishing off the entry pass or offensive put back. 

 

5’9 PG Johnathan Diaz of Deer Valley HS (AZ) 2019 (Powerhouse Hoops 17U) 

Floor general. Feisty on both ends, true tone setter. Tight handle with contact. Unselfish in transition.

 

5’11 SG Dwayne Ealy of Skyline HS 2018 (Oakland Rebels 17u Red)

Explosive athlete with a strong frame. Slasher that likes contact and has a great first step. Good shooter and GREAT defender on and off of the ball.

 

6’0 PG AJ Echols of Montclair HS 2020 (California Stars 17s Black)

Lethal stop and start ability off of the dribble as well as slashing to the rim

 

6’2 SF Jarin Edwards of Bishop O’Dowd HS 2021(Oakland Soldiers 15U Black)

Physical player with a high motor that defends and rebounds well. Can drive the ball well and finish.

 

 

6’7 Kruger Edwards of Crater HS (OR) 2020 (Team Fly Largent 16u)

Long and athletic, a good shot blocker. Runs the flood well and a good finisher. Ok catch and shoot. Very active.

 

6’3 PG Cole Ekeler of Santa Barbara HS 2020 (805 Family 16u)

Solid handler who slashes to the rim well. Uses high I.Q. to be a great cutter away from

the ball. Never gives up on a play does a good job not fouling on defense.

 

*6’1 PG Charles Elzie of Bellarmine Prep 2019 (Seattle Select High Academic)

Solid skills, pushes the fast break well. Runs a team. D 1 prospect.

 

*6’3 W Jay Ferguson Heritage Christian  2020 (WCE 16 Silver)

Offensively can score in various ways.  Has ability to get to the basket off the bounce and create opportunities for himself to score.  Can also shoot the ball from long distance stretching out the defense.  Has long wingspan that can cause some problems on the defensive end.

Big-time shooter with deep range! Confident ball handler. Has a good feel for the game. Division I prospect.

 

5’9 Guard Josiah Frank of John H Pitman HS 2021 (Stanco Stampede 15)

Scoring guard. Long and versatile. Good shooter and effective going to the basket.

 

6’2 PG Cash Fulton of San Domenico HS 2019 (NBBA HGSL)

Knock-down shooter and a very skilled passer. Communicates well defensively.

Has a nice hesitation drive, can shoot it with 3 range. Moves well without the ball. Can rebound. Committed to Southern Idaho.

 

6’7 SF Joesph Garza of Shadow Ridge HS (AZ) 2020 (Power House Hoops 16U Ortega)

High energy guy. Runs the floor and rebounds well. Solid handler. Once he gets a little more stronger frame he will be a big recruit for colleges.

 

6’2 SG Tyson Geraci of San Marin HS 2021 (Lakeshow 15’s White)

Solid guard who can knock down shots at a high clip from three and sets solid for teammates to get open shots. Plays for his teammates on every possession. Makes the right plays when coming off of ball screens.

 

6’7 SG Jonah Geron of San Joaquin Memorial HS 2018 (California United 559)

Tall wing with a very good jump shot. Uses wing span to shoot over defenders. Solid I.Q. for the game.

 

6’0 SG Ryan Gilburne of Brophy College Prep (AZ) 2019 (Powerhouse Hoops 17 Schumaker)

Solid shooter with long range. Has a nice middle game in the half court, has a floater. Can defend.

 

5’7 PG Joshua Govett of Hughson HS 2021 (Stanco Stampede 15u)

Crafty scorer with a good handle. Good job driving the ball and making the correct pass.

 

5’8 PG Nick Grassman of Bellarmine Prep 2019 (Top Flight Elite 17 Red)

Good ball handling skills, has a motor. Can run a team, has a feel for the game.

 

6’1 SG Alrek Greenhalgh of Timpview HS (UT) 2019 (Salt Lake Metro 17 Black)

Great pull-up jumper and a very good passer. Has an excellent pull up game. Strong competitor who doesn’t foul. Plays with a quiet confidence.

 

*6’5 SF Damian Guest Jr of Highland HS 2019 (La Elite 17u Premier)

Strong dribbling and size at his position allow him to get to the cup. Length allows him to finish

layups in traffic and also to be disruptive defensively.

 

6’3 SG Dylan Han of Bentley HS 2019 (Lakeshow 17U Select)

Heady player, good IQ. Has a consistent three point stroke. Runs the floor well on both ends. Willing to get physical on defense.

 

5’11 CG Brett Hardt Jr of Rancho Solano Prep (AZ) 2021 (Power House Hoops 15 Compton)

Two-way guard that has range and runs his lanes quickly for easy opportunities. Good motor. Has a decent handle, nice-looking shot. Defends well. Plays hard on both ends of the floor and plays with a chip on his shoulder.

Very active and athletic combo guard. Gets to the basket on the drive consistently. Plays with an attack mentality. Solid rebounder from the guard position.

Scoring guard that can play point. Good driver to the rim and nice catch and shoot.

 

6’4 CF Paul Hayden of Sunnyslope HS (AZ) 2020 (Powerhouse Hoops 17 King)

Capable ball handler, has a nice motor. Dribbles operates well on the block. Good rebounder.

 

5’9 PG Jonathan Hill of Long Beach Poly HS 2019 (LA Elite 17u Premier)

Handles the ball confidently, has a nice pull up game. Shoots it fairly well with 3-point range.

 

6’3 SG Adam Hinton of Harvard-Westlake HS 2021 (WCE 15u UAA)

Good defender with good size. Runs the floor well. Sharp shooter.

 

6’8 C Isaiah Holm of Troy HS 2020 (Cali Rebels 16 Select)

Big-framed post with good hands and has a nice feel. Sets good screens, is able to finish consistently around the basket.  Great at using his body and angles to get into positions to score.  Good rebounder.  Runs the floor hard and competes on both ends.

Agile and athletic forward that plays with great energy on both ends of the court finishing around the rim and contesting shots. Plays hard! Good looking mid range shot. Great shooting touch at the free-throw line. Defends 1-4 with great length and actively pursues rebounds.

 

6’4 SG Zach Hobbs of Mesa HS (AZ) 2019 (Powerhouse Hoops 17 Contreras)

Real nice shooter with long range. Runs the floor well, can finish in transition. D 1 prospect.

 

5’11 G Lee Hubbard III 2021 Riordan HS 2021 (Oakland Soldiers 15u Green)

Solid point guard who is good at making plays in the open court. Good attack and finisher. Ok catch and shoot.

 

6’2 PG Akoye Hudson of Leuzinger HS 2022 (WCEUA 15 Gold)

Shifty guard with good feet and improving point guard qualities. Can cover ground in a hurry on both ends when engaged for long steals or quick finishes at the basket. Finishes through or around contact very well in the open court.

 

6’0 SG Tyler Isaak of San Ramon Valley HS 2021 (Lakeshow 15’s White)

Good shooter, knows how to play. Plays hard with good energy.

 

*6’2 PG Connor Jackson of Dublin HS 2018 (California Stars 17u Platinum)

Tough-minded and athletic. Solid passer out of pick and roll situations. Elite three level scorer who can play above the rim.

 

5’10 PG John Jacobsen of Branson HS 2021 (Lakeshow 15’s White)

Quick and shifty point guard. Floor general on the court. Good passer and good feel of the game.

 

6’1 PG Justice Jackson of Millenium HS (AZ) 2021 (Power House Hoops 15 Compton)

Fantastic two-way guard with great instincts and leadership qualities. Can shoot the ball and get to the rim quickly while making the right play instinctively.

Long and athletic big man who is an impressive physical specimen. Hard to guard inside. Dominant on the boards. Outlets it well.

 

5’11 PG Connor Jenkins of Tamalpais HS 2020 (NBBA 16u Showcase)

Long and skilled slasher. A crafty passer who finishes well inside. Tough.

 

6’4 G Kristian Jemerson of Long Beach Poly HS 2021 (WCEUA 15 Gold)

Long and wiry guard that can get to the rim and finish with finesse around contact. Defends 1-4 with improving lateral quickness and length. Sneaky quick with the ability to change directions when going downhill versus defenders.

 

5’11 SG Ian Johns of Sacred Heart Cathedral 2021 (Hoop Life Academy 15u)

Long guard that can shoot from deep. Great feel for the game and makes great decisions on the fly with solid fundamentals.

Elite ball handler who can’t be contained. Very explosive in transition. Finishes real well in the paint. Very tough competitor. Has a nice floater.

 

6’8  P Dane Johnson of Rocklin Independent Charter 2020 (YBA 16U Elite Collins)

Long and active post who runs the floor well. Good rebounder and shot blocker.

 

6’7 CF David Jones of Grant Union HS 2019 (NBBA 17U HGSL)

Long, active and athletic. Scores in many different ways: Has a turnaround shot on the block and a nice floater, solid driver with a nice first step.

 

6’4 SF Ronald Jones Jr. of Bay Area Technology HS 2021 (Oakland Soldiers 15u Black)

Raw, athletic, long wing that has huge upside and potential. Rebounds the ball with a purpose and gets teams extra possessions.

 

6’4 SF Grant Jordan of Mountain View HS (OR) 2020 (Team Fly Largent 16u)

Good driver and shot blocker. Ok ball skills, very active on both ends of the court.

 

6’0 PG Derek Kaps of Mountain View HS (AZ) 2021(Power House Hoops 15 Compton)

Two-way guard that can shoot the ball and has a nice feel for the game. Possesses strength to defend and rebounds well. Nice pull-up jumper in the open court and stop on the dime situations.

All around basketball player with high IQ that plays with great pace and awareness.  Good shooter from distance that doesn’t force bad shots.  A glue guy that plays both ends of the court at a high level.  Great system player that makes his teammates better.

 

6’7 PF Austin Killian of Oak Park HS 2020 (LA Elite 17U Grey)

Active rebounder. Can get up and down the floor. High motor. Not afraid to do dirty work. Raw but has potential.

 

6’6 W Ryan Kiachian of Bellarmine College Prep 2021 (Team Supernova 15u)

Long and active wing with a good motor. Good driving to the basket.  Good rebounder and has nice post moves.

Confident ball handler. Has a nice pull up game in the half court. Solid driver with a nice first step.

Real good passer who makes plays in transition. Has a solid middle game half court and a nice hesitation move.

Combo guard with a versatile offensive game. Contributes in many ways. Runs the floor well.

Quick guard and a good driver and defender. Good facilitator for his team and plays hard.

Shows post up skills, ok rebounder with length to get to the ball.

A good defender and rebounder and athlete. Does a good job of getting to the rim, shoots it ok and has 3-point range. Good rebounder.

Athletic slasher. Explosive yet smooth. Large frame, bounces defenders away. Solid playmaker in transition who handles and passes it well. Shoots it fairly well with 3 range. Capable rebounder from the guard position.

 

6’6 SF Timothy Lont of Skyline HS (UT) 2019 (Salt Lake Metro 17 Black)

Great spin move in traffic and able to finish over defenders with large wing span.

Good footwork and shooting mechanics.

 

5’11 PG Marshall Lott V of California HS 2019 (Bay Area Warriors Gold 17u)

Physical slasher who excels at getting to the basket. Skilled at executing the pick and roll.

 

6’3 PF Myles Lofton of Taft HS 2020 (WCE 16 Silver)

Offensively a strong post player who has the ability to consistently pin and seal opponents on the block.  Good at using his body to get position on defenders and is able to score in multiple ways. Good on the glass and able to get his team extra possessions.

 

6’0 SG Jackie Luong of George Washington HS 2019 (Bay Area Warriors Gold 17u)

Lights out shooter with excellent mechanics. Capable of stringing multiple makes together with ease. Strong I.Q. player who uses his length to compete on defense.

 

6’1 SG Desmond Mac of Oakland Tech HS 2022 (Oakland Soldiers 15u Green)

Strong guard who’s a straight athlete. Good rebounder who uses 2nd jump. Good attacking the rim and a solid offensive rebounder.
