Here is a report on the Hoop Review Evaluation Workout on Tuesday August 18 at Slam Academy in Hayward. The event was a matchup between Port City out of Stockton and Stanco Stampede from Turlock.
Port City
6’1 CG Ben Almaraz of Lincoln HS 2021
Almaraz is a competitive combo guard with a solid all-around package. He’s able to impact the game in a lot of different ways.
He’s a solid ball handler and passer who makes good decisions. He has a pull-up game in the half court. But his best asset is his ability to shoot the ball (with 3 range). He can drill it and he takes good shots.
Almaraz works hard at the defensive end and has shown himself to be a capable on-ball defender.
Don’t sleep on this kid college coaches-put him on the radar.
6’1 CG Beau Blackman of Lincoln HS 2021
Blackman is a fairly athletic combo guard with a real versatile all-around game. He could be classified as a complete player if there is such a thing.
He handles it well and is a real good passer. He’s an effective playmaker in transition who can finish at the end of the break.
Blackman does a lot of things in the half court including moving without the ball. He shoots it ok with 3-range, has a solid floater and a nice step back move. He is also a solid driver who can finish.
Blackman is a capable rebounder and a willing defender.
He is a solid college prospect with the level he plays at up in the air at this point
6’1 CG Malik Cotta of Lincoln HS 2021
Cotta is a strong and fairly athletic combo guard who plays in attack mode.
He’s a confident ball handler and a real good passer who can find the open man. He makes plays in transition for himself and others.
Cotta is a solid driver with a nice hesitation move who can get to the basket and finish. He probably could prove himself a little more a perimeter shooter.
He does work hard on defense and will get after the opponent and he is a capable rebounder.
Cotta is a legit prospect for the next level.
6’1 SG Gavin Martinez of Lincoln HS 2022
Martinez is a two-guard who can really shoot the ball (with long range). He puts it up with great confidence and believes every shot is going in. And his shot selection is pretty good as well.
He bounces it ok and has a pull-up game in the half court. He moves without the ball and he has an ok floater shot.
Martinez could help himself to increase his athleticism some and show more at the defensive end.
But if you are looking for a legit shooter at the next level this is your guy.
6’1 SG Deven Sarabia of Lincoln HS 2021
Sarabia is a fundamentally sound two guard who understands how to play. And in addition to his high IQ he is a hustler who makes a lot of effort plays.
He can handle and pass it and he does a nice job pushing the break and getting things done. He has a solid floater to finish at the end of the break. Sarabia can also put it down and get to the basket on the drive.
Impressively for a guard, he really pursues rebounds and goes after the ball.
Sarabia provides a spark with his hustle and is a real team guy. Any college coach can appreciate that.
6’3 G/W Andre Warren of Lincoln HS 2022
Warren is a very competitive guard/wing who does all the little things and the big things. He really brings a lot to the table.
He can score in transition (finishing well) and he scores every way possible in a half court setting.
Warren is a pretty good 3-point shooter, he has a mid-range pull-up game, he goes hard to the basket on the drive and he can post-up some.
He is capable defender and a very aggressive rebounder.
Warren is a very promising prospect with a bright future.
Stanco Stampede
6’3 G/W Michael Heidelbach of Turlock HS 2022
Heidelbach is a “shooting specialist” who will pull up from anywhere at anytime if you leave him open. He can catch and shoot, or he can shoot it off the dribble. And he does have long range. His shot selection needs some work but he does have a lot of confidence in his shot.
He is an ok ball handler and he can pass it. He runs the floor well and he has a clever floater shot.
The biggest need for Heidelbach is at the defensive end. That is where he needs to show progress and play in attack mode like he does on offense.
If coaches need a shooter this is a guy they need to check out.
5’10 PG Daniel Malagon of Turlock HS 2022
Malagon is a fairly athletic one-man who works hard and has a solid all-around game.
He’s a confident ball handler and a good passer who is effective in transition. He will pull up confidently at the end of the break.
Malagon can shoot it fairly well with 3 range. He has a sneaky first step and is a solid driver/penetrator.
He does work hard at the defensive end and has a solid concept of team defense away from the ball.
Malagon does a lot of things to help a team win and that should be attractive to any coach.
6’0 SG Anthony Mendoza of Turlock HS 2022
Mendoza is a two guard who runs the floor pretty well and has a good offensive skill set.
He can handle and pass it and he is impressive in transition with his ability to pull up and his floater shot. He is a good-looking shooter with 3-range who has a lot of confidence.
Mendoza’s best asset is his ability to pull up, both in transition and in the half court.
He’s also an ok rebounder from the guard position.
Mendoza is a pretty consistent performer who does belong on the 2022 radar.
6’3 SF Pedro Vasquez of Turlock HS 2021
Vasquez is a “glue guy” type of player that every team needs to have. He really tries to fit in and do whatever the team needs to be done.
He does not look to score much but has a nice drop step move on the block and a solid face-up drive. He is a good passer who is very unselfish.
Vasquez will do the “dirty work” as a rebounder and defender very willingly.
This is a guy who is all about the team and that is just what a coach needs and wants.
5’11 CG Cameron Walker of Turlock HS 2021
Walker had an impressive showing at this event. It really looks like he is starting to “arrive” as a player.
He is an athletic combo guard with nice burst who does a whole lot of things. He consistently makes plays for himself and others. He is quite effective as a scorer and as a faciliator/distributor.
Walker sees the floor very well in transition and will make the money pass. And he will push it on the break and pull up at the end consistently well.
He is a good shooter with long range who can catch and shoot or pull-up off the dribble. He has a nice floater and he is an effective driver.
Walker is a hustler and he never stops running. His biggest need at this point is to attack on defense like he does on offense.
But he is a very promising prospect for the next level for sure.
5’11 PG Tyson Weatherbee of Turlock HS 2021
Weatherbee is a competitive one man with some toughness who has the right approach to the game and some tools to go along with it.
He is a solid ball handler and passer who can run a team. He knows how to play and makes pretty good decisions.
Weatherbee shoots it ok with 3 range and has a nice floater. He is an effective penetrator who gets in the lane and makes plays.
He is a guy the coach can put a whole lot of trust in without a doubt.
