Report on 2016 Sports Academy Competition Clinic

The 1st Annual Sports Academy Competition Clinic was held on Sunday September 11 at the new Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, CA. Here is a report on the event.

Top Prospects: (* indicates highest consideration for this category.)

*6’1 CG Ezekial Alley of Damien HS 2017 (Tucson Spartans 17U)

Athletic- has a nice burst, handles and passes it well, solid playmaker in transition, has a nice first step, can rebound.

*6’7 SF Jaxson Baker of Brophy Prep, AZ 2018 (AZ Powerhouse 17 Black)

Average athlete, fairly long arms, decent ball handler, can pass, can pull up in the half court, can shoot it (high release), has a nice feel.

6’6 F/C Keveon Baptiste of Pacific Hills HS 2019 (Magic West 17U)

Fairly athletic, long arms, decent ball handlers, has an ok one-bounce drive, can dribble operate on the block, solid rebounder who does pursue the ball.

6’3 CG Sam Beskind of Catalina Foothills, AZ 2018 (AZ Powerhouse 17 Black)

Confident ball handler, makes the right pass in transition, can pull up in the half court, has a hesitation move and a floater drive, plays in attack mode.

6’1 SG Mark Bolo of Camarillo HS 2019 (So Cal Future)

Ok athlete, solid ball handler, pulls up in transition,

6’1 G/W Terrel Bowers of Cienega HS, AZ 2020 (Tucson Spartans 15U)

Fairly athletic, long arms, capable ball handler and passer, ok playmaker in transition, decent shooter with 3-point range, ok driver.

6’3 PG Ian Burke of Brophy Prep, AZ 2018 (AZ Powerhouse 17 Black)

Average/fair athlete, can run, solid ball handler, passes it well, move ok without the ball, shoots it ok with 3-point range.

6’2 CG Traveyon Brown of San Bernardino HS 2019 (Magic West 17U)

Athletic, capable ball hander, decent shooter with 3-point range, ok driver, can rebound.

*6’2 SG Brian Dawson of Vistamar HS 2017 (Team Independent)

Good athlete can handle it real good passer, playmaker in transition, moves well without the ball, good driver. Put himself on the radar with his performance in this event.

**6’5 SF/G Majok Deng of Salpointe HS, AZ 2019 (AZ Powerhouse 17 Black)

Deng was arguably the top prospect in the event. He has a very versatile all-around skill set and an endless motor. He gets to the basket on the drive consistently and also has a nice pull up game. He is explosive and can elevate over defenders. He can shoot it ok and has 3-point range. He is also a solid rebounder and defender. Deng belongs on the high major radar.

**6’9 C Connor Dunn of Brophy Prep, AZ 2018 (AZ Powerhouse 17 Black)

Dunn is a five-man with long arms and a capable post up game. He can operate on the block and has a nice jump hook. He is also a pretty consistent rebounder. Dunn is a low major prospect at this point.  

5’11 PG Mikey Hinkle of St Bonaventure HS 2019 (VC Swoosh)

Confident handler, sees the floor, can run a pick and roll, can shoot it from the perimeter, runs a team fairly well.

**6’7 PF/C Nick Jackson of Sunnyside HS, AZ 2018 (AZ Powerhouse 17 Black)

Jackson is a combo post man with long arms with decent post up skills. He’s a decent ball handler who has an ok one-bounce drive. He can dribble operate on the block and has a jump hook but he needs to finish better. He’s a capable rebounder and shot blocker on, the defensive end. Jackson belongs on the low major radar with potential to go higher

**6’0 CG Evan Nelson of Mountain View HS, AZ 2020 (AZ Powerhouse 17 Black)

Nelson is a fairly athletic combo guard with a lot of promise. He has solid ball handling skills and is a nice playmaker in transition. He also shoots it fairly well with 3-point range. Nelson is a sure-fire Division I Prospect- just a matter of what level he ends up at.

6’8 C Boe Nguidojol of Central City Value HS 2018 (Magic West 17U)

Fairly good athlete, ok strength, long arms, runs the floor, passes it well, still developing on both ends of the floor, does have some upside.

6’4 G/W Gabe Okmin of University HS 2017 (Magic West 17U)

Moves ok without the ball, shoots it well with deep range, can post up some, is an active rebounder, needs some work defensively.

6’1 SG Cesar Saenz of Tucson HS, AZ 2020 (Tucson Spartans 15U)

Average athlete, ok ball handler, has a mid-range game in the half court, decent shooter with 3-point range.

6’5 G/W Travis Walker of Sabino HS 2017 (Tucson Spartans 17U)

Capable transition playmaker-finishes well, solid driver, shoots it well, high IQ.
